January News / by Steve Barry

Happy new year all! After a holiday break full of Christmas food, 2014 kicks well and truly into gear musically over the next few weeks.

Steve Barry Trio @ Foundry 616, Wed 15th Jan

Alex Boneham, Tim Firth and I are very happy to be playing our first gig at Sydney's newest, four-night-a-week jazz venue, Foundry 616 this coming Wednesday 15th January. We'll be premiering a set of brand new music written over the past few months and due to be recorded at Niko Schauble's Pughouse Studios in Melbourne in February - generously donated as part of the runner-up prize I received at the National Jazz Awards last year. A follow up to the the album we released in December 2012, the new record will feature some special guests and also premier some of the music I've been working on as part of my PhD at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. More news on a release date coming in the next few months.

Dale Barlow Quintet @ Foundry 616, Fri 10th Jan

I'm really looking forward to making some music with Dale Barlow this coming Friday, also at Foundry 616. Dale was one of the first established Australian musicians I played with after moving to Sydney, and every experience making music with him is profoundly rewarding. Expect some open explorations of jazz standards also featuring my musical brothers Eamon Dilworth on trumpet and the powerhouse rhythm section of Tom Botting and Paul Derricott.

Jodie Michael Quartet @ Foundry 616, Thu 16th Jan

One of Sydney's finest emerging drummers, Jodie was the 2013 recipient of the Jann Rutherford Award and her quartet features the incredible Peter Farrar on alto and onmipresent Tom Botting on bass. We'll be playing a mix of Jodie's arrangements of lesser-known standards and some of Peter, Tom and my original compositions.

Dave Jackson Quartet @ Foundry 616, Wed 29th Jan

I find some of my most satisfying musical experiences come from playing other people's original music; Dave is an outstanding composer/alto saxophonist/quantum physicist and it's always a pleasure to share a bandstand with him. Following up on a hugely successful tour of Australia in June/July 2013, for this gig Dave's quartet will be flying through a set of brand new music with a focus on spontaneity within flexible structures. Stay tuned for news on an upcoming live album complied from recordings from the aforementioned tour, and check out Dave's website to hear his EP recorded in New York City with heavyweights Sean Wayland, Orlando le Fleming and Gregory Hutchinson.

Jazzgroove Summer Festival, 16th-19th Jan

It's that time of year again, and the massively successful Jazzgroove festival is back for it's 4th year bigger than ever. Music is happening around Sydney's inner city for 4 nights across half a dozen venues and featuring some of Australia's finest jazz artists, so check out the Jazzgroove website for the full run down and tickets.

Corridor Organ Trio Residency, Wednesdays in Jan

If you're looking for somewhere to hear some vintage organ trio jazz over a few drinks on a Wednesday night, Ben Pannuci, James Waples and I are starting a little month long weekly residency at Newtown's Corridor Bar this month, with the 15th and 29th of Jan featuring Harry Sutherland on organ. Music is on 9pm until late and will probably feature a number of drop-by special guests.

That's all for now, so all the best for a successful start to 2014!
